Lemons Boost Immunity

“The intense color and bright sunshiny smell of lemons make me feel like it’s sunny outside, even when it’s not,” says celebrity nutritionist Ashley Koff, R.D., founder of  www.AshleyKoffApproved.com .

One favorite snack: “I mix lemon juice and Greek yogurt with a little granola for a lighter, healthier version of a lemon bar.”

Koff has also found that the perks of this fruit go beyond flavor: “If I feel a cold coming on, I’ll mix the juice of half a lemon with ½ tsp. each of cayenne pepper and ginger—I’ll use crushed, ground or powdered ginger, depending on what I have on hand. I add that to sparkling water and drink it to open up my sinuses and help fight off sickness.” Koff says this zingy mix also tastes great drizzled over vegetables or fish.

How they fortify: Lemons are a top source of vitamin C. This antioxidant plays a key role in the function of phagocytes, white blood cells that destroy invading microbes. Vitamin C also has been shown to reduce levels of the immunity-sapping stress hormone cortisol.

I always have fresh lemons in my fridge. My Hubby and I enjoy our ice water with lemons.
